Which seller has the cheapest train ticket?

1723 trains compared on 62 routes

A student project, started out of curiosity: since October 2026 I have been checking the fares of the same trains at 13 railway sellers every day, on 62 routes across Europe. The question behind it: where do you get the same ticket cheapest? So far it is usually the railway of the origin or destination country, but not always, and some sellers charge several times as much for the same train.

All routes

The small track shows one example train from the latest check: cheapest seller on the left, each further dot another seller. The longer the solid track, the bigger the price difference for the same train. “Largest difference”: highest divided by lowest fare for the same train. “From”: lowest fare in the latest check of this route, for one of the travel dates checked.

Mostly. For 94% of the compared trains (1538 of 1631) a railway of the origin or destination country was cheapest or as cheap as the cheapest other seller.

Is it worth buying the ticket from a foreign railway?

Sometimes. For 61 of 515 trains (12%) another railway was cheaper than the railways of the origin and destination countries, most often on the routes Munich – Verona, Innsbruck – Verona, Paris – Frankfurt. Railways not involved in the route charged a median of 1.1 times the cheapest fare.

Are resellers like Omio more expensive?

Mostly yes. Omio was cheapest for 36 of 451 compared trains and cost a median of 13 % more than the cheapest seller. An estimated service fee of about 6.5% (at least €2) is included.

When should you buy the train ticket?

As early as possible. On 38 routes with data for both times, the cheapest ticket 1–2 weeks before travel was a median of 38% more expensive than more than 4 weeks ahead.

How up to date are the fares?

Fares are checked again every day, latest data: 18 Oct 2026. They change all the time; please check with the seller before booking.
